Each year, millions of elderly Americans fall victim to some type of financial fraud, racking up more than $3 billion in losses annually. Criminals use a variety of methods to deceive these victims, including romance, sweepstakes, charity, technology support, grandparent, lottery, and government impersonation schemes.
Preventing Identity Theft
The FBI reported 27,922 victims of identity theft in 2022. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) received 231,724 reports of identity theft in Q4 2023 alone. Data breaches involving personally identifiable information had one of the highest victim counts compared to other crimes in 2022, according to the Internet Crime Complaint Center. AI-driven identity theft scams will likely increase in 2024.​

82% rise in online grooming crimes against children in the last 5 years. There are an estimated 500,000 online predators active each day. According to the F.B.I., over 50 percent of the victims of online sexual exploitation are between the ages of 12 and 15. Children also have other threats, including cyberbullying, sextortion, and access to inappropriate content.
Malware Ransomware Attacks
In 2023, the worldwide number of malware attacks reached 6.06 billion, an increase of 10 percent compared to the preceding year. In recent years, the highest number of malware attacks was detected in 2018, when 10.5 billion such attacks were reported across the globe.

I am Lindsey Mannion, the founder of RuralDefense. I have over a decade of experience in the cybersecurity realm within the private sector, particularly in critical infrastructure protection. My academic background includes a Bachelor's degree in Computer Forensics and Security from Kent State University and a Master's degree in Digital Forensics and Cyber Investigation from the University of Maryland. Additionally, I am equipped with numerous certifications, including the esteemed CISSP.

Motivated by this, I embarked on a mission to establish an entity dedicated to empowering families to safeguard their data and exercise enhanced oversight over their children's online activities, all within an accessible framework of affordability.
